It started out as a simple interview with Klevah in The News-Gazette… Where we learned she is the MC, designer, and bar manager at The Canopy Club, and also performs/organizes The Culture, an open mic event for our local hip hop scene. We immediately were hooked and wanted to know more…
What are you grateful for today?
The possibilities of tomorrow.
Tell us about one of your friends and what you love about her.
My girl Saleema. I love her because no matter how hard or complex her exterior, her loyalty to her family and friends is unmatched. I appreciate her for her honesty and practicality.
Describe one of the best days of your life.
My 25th Birthday on May 24th I celebrated at the Summer Camp Music Festival through performance & shared it with friends, fans and my father. It began with a 2am performance in the woods where we camped. We set up a PA system, DJ Booth, drums & bass guitar and played for everyone who passed through that night. I spent the rest of that day with libations, meeting summer campers, having water guns fights and ended the evening with a staged performance in front of a completely new crowd. My dad interrupted my performance, singing happy birthday with the crowd. I partied until the sun came up & fell in love.
What’s the best lesson you learned from your mother/grandmother?
To forgive & give.
We’re all unique. What is your special gift?
Healing through emceeing.
What could women be doing to make their community a better place?
Continue taking leadership roles & being visible/supportive to other women—we should be creating together across our respective fields.
What would you do if you weren’t afraid?
I would utilize every platform and opportunity to exhibit my emcee skills and speak out against bullshit. Every.
