Jan Colarusso Seeley
Most people think Jan Colarusso Seeley is taller than she actually is. Four foot, 11 and a half proud inches tall since age 13, Jan learned the shocking news last December that she is actually shrinking. A native Bostonian and life-long Red Sox fan, Jan moved from New England to Champaign-Urbana in 1987 with her husband and college sweetheart, Joe, to attend grad school at the University of Illinois and ended up staying and making this fabulous community her home, along with sons, Jake and Paul, now young men pursuing graduate and undergraduate degrees at universities in California.
Jan is the publisher and co-owner of Marathon & Beyond (M&B), an international magazine for long-distance runners. She is also the co-director of the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon and part of the local group that owns and manages the event. A Yale graduate and former world-class field hockey player who played on the U.S. National Field Hockey Team for four years, Jan turned in her stick and cleats in the early ’80s and became an avid long-distance runner. Running—especially in the early morning, under the moon and the stars—is a constant balm, as Jan continues to find her way in a world that no longer includes her brave Joe, who passed away in October 2012, from leukemia, after a 21-month struggle with the disease.
