What are you grateful for today?
I woke up in Italy today. So I am grateful my jeans still fit and I don’t have a splitting headache.

Had I woken up in the US, I would tell you I’m grateful for the Stephens Family YMCA. It is not only is an amazing outlet for health and inclusivity- but it’s an outlet for moms who need a break, some time to themselves and a place to do something good for themselves. There are amazing people there doing amazing things for this community who I never would have met otherwise. They inspire me. The place and the people in it make me happy everyday.

Tell us about one of your friends and what you love about her.
Angie Marker. For telling me not to give any canned answers to this questionnaire. —AND—Nancy Benson. She is my role model, mentor and friend. She is a journalism professor at the U of I. She guided me through grad school, internships, investigative reporting in Peruvian prisons, my first job, leaving TV and now teaching at the U of I. She is strong, successful and brilliant. She single-handedly created the U of I international reporting program and countless stories have been told that wouldn’t have been told otherwise.

Describe one of the best days of your life.
One of my best days was in a little Mexican surfer town called Sayulita outside Puerto Vallarta Mexico.  It is remote, hyper local and authentic. I don’t know what they put in the margaritas there but the place is magical. I’ve gone with my family and close friends from Champaign and it is always the best day.

What’s the best lesson you learned from your mother/grandmother?
Always to toast to the saying: “Here’s to those who wish us well and all the rest can go to hell.”

We’re all unique. What is your special gift?
I’m the best dancer I know.

What could women be doing to make their community a better place?
Women need to stop looking at other women’s “grass” and wondering why its SO “green” on the “other side.” It’s not. Everyone is doing their damnedest to be a good mom, businesswoman, wife, daughter, sister, friend. Everyone has their own ups and downs.  They may not be YOUR ups and downs… but they DO have ups and DOWNS.  Be sensitive, caring, and there for each other.

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?
Put curse words in my answers to this questionnaire.
